Book Description:

When MAX Home Security tries to hire their private investigation firm to prove the corruption the company is on trial for occurred without the knowledge of the upper management, Ian and Hannah are reluctant to help.

Unfortunately, MAX’s legal team thinks it looks good for their PR to have Hacked Investigations involved, forcing Ian and Hannah’s hand. But Ian’s headaches are getting worse, and Hannah and Ian will have to rely on each other even more if they stand a chance of getting out of this mess alive.

Excerpt:

Ian Bradley hit send on an email to one of Hacked Investigations’ frequent customers. This time, the business owner had needed him to check on his future partner to make sure there wouldn’t be trouble if he signed the partnership agreement. Ian had the potential business partner’s email hacked in no time, and within five minutes, he’d completed his task.

Easy.

The client was paranoid, and, even if Ian thought those types of assignments were frivolous, he had a paycheck on its way.

Slender, feminine arms wrapped around his chest as Hannah hugged him from behind. Her lips brushed his earlobe, and her velvety tongue slid along the edge of it. “Now that we’ve wrapped another case, how about we celebrate?” Her voice was a low purr.

He shivered and placed his hands over hers. “I’ll be right there. Let me shut down the computer. Bernard has been surfing some nasty porn sites. I’m not chancing that he’ll get another virus on my machine.”

Hannah nibbled his neck, and he groaned. She pulled away, trailing her fingertips over his chest and shoulder.

Swiveling in his chair, he watched her saunter toward the bedroom. Once she got to the doorway of the bedroom, she looked back at him, giving him a seductive smile.

Ian grinned and then spun around to face the computer. He changed the password again, tweaking the system’s safety features, and shut it down.

From the living room, he heard Bernard, the pint-sized gnome, talking in hushed tones entirely different from his usual loud, obnoxious demeanor.

The urge to see what mischief Bernard was getting into nearly drove him toward the living room, but Hannah’s sexy smile won out. He headed toward the bedroom, thinking of the things he’d like to do to her. His hand was hovering over the doorknob when the phone rang.

Sighing, he walked to the office phone, but it fell silent.

From the other room, Bernard spoke in an annoyed, yet strangely husky voice. “Uh huh. Well, buster, I don’t care who you are. There’s someone important on the other line giving me some, uh, juicy details about something,” Bernard said. He had a slight manic pitch that always grated on Ian’s nerves.

Reaching for the phone and fearing the worst, Ian hoped whoever had called their business line wasn’t already completely insulted by Bernard’s behavior. He mentally made a note to keep Bernard caged when at all possible.

“Oh, stop your whining. You can call back later.” Impatience picked up in the gnome’s voice as did his volume.

Ian barely managed to pick up the office phone as he heard the other phone slam onto the receiver in the living room. “Hello? Anyone there?”

“Ah, Ian, hello. It’s been a while.” Senator Kendall’s voice came through clearly.

News Bytes

Hey everyone! I hope you’re having an awesome Thursday. I have some very cool news to share.

First of all… wow, Jungle Heat is up for Preditors & Editor’s Readers’ Poll for Romance Short Story in 2011! I’d love your vote!

I’m also excited to share that Techno Crazed, the first book in the Hacked Investigations series, is now available for Nook at Barnes & Noble! Get your copy here.

Also, I have the tagline and blurb for my February 2012 release, Captive Moonlight, part of the Wolves of the Wild West multi-author series, but can be read as a standalone. The tagline and blurb might still change a little, but I figured I’d give all you a sneak peek!

Tagline: A gentlewoman will do whatever it takes to rescue her captive werewolf betrothed.

Blurb: When her betrothed, Joe, is taken captive by a group of men looking for werewolf laborers, it’s up to Charlotte to track him down and win him back.

Pretty simple, but I think it sums the story up well. I can’t wait to see the cover, and I’ll definitely share when I get it!

The Do’s and Don’ts of Caring for Gnomes

This week’s Into the Paranormal is a fun post. It’s tied in with my Hacked Investigations cyberpunk romance series, so then why is this about gnomes you ask? Meet Bernard, a fantastically funny and obnoxious sidekick to my technomage hero, Ian Bradley. He can be helpful or he can be a pain in the butt.

Here are a few tips Ian’s learned.

DO keep the house full of good fruits and vegetables since gnomes tend to be herbivores. Side note: make sure you don’t forget to bring him his favorite sweets too. Yes, they can have a sweet tooth.

DON’T keep alcohol anywhere near the house. The gnome will drink himself silly and be grumpy from the nasty hangover that ensues.

DO treat him nicely. If you don’t, chances are he’ll pay you back in mischievous ways.

DON’T keep your eyes off him for a second when things start to go wrong. He might bring more trouble on your head.

DO encourage him to plant his own garden, if you like to keep a roof over your head. He eats a lot.

• And finally, DON’T bring home a girl you’re interested in romantically, he’ll probably make lots of lewd innuendos that you wouldn’t want her to hear.

What is Cyberpunk?

First guest posted at Kinley Baker’s blog.

As I’ve been promoting, a common question has come up. “What is Cyberpunk? I’ve never heard of that before.” But I’m willing to bet that you’re heard of some movies that portray it. The Matrix, anyone? How about Blade Runner, The Terminator, Strange Days, or 12 Monkeys? Yep! I knew it. I see the distant recognition.

Let’s look at the name, cyberpunk. It is a combination of cybernetics and punk. But what makes something a cyberpunk? There are three main elements: Setting, Protagonist, and Society/Government. I’ll try not to geek out too much as I go over them! *grins*

Setting: First of all, the base genre of cyberpunk is science fiction, so it’s no surprise that they take place in the future. Although, instead of what you normally think of with science fiction’s space travel and galaxies, a cyberpunk is placed in near-future Earth. They are post-industrial dystopias set in high-tech, very urbanized cities, more specifically in what is described by Wikipedia as “the often nihilistic underground side of an electronic society.” The world is usually dark and technology rules it.

Protagonist: The protagonist is usually a lone hero computer hacker who fights against injustice. Here is a good, precise clip from Wikipedia: “Many cyberpunk protagonists are manipulated, placed in situations where they have little or no choice, and although they might see things through, they do not necessarily come out any further ahead than they previously were. … This emphasis on the misfits and the malcontents is the ‘punk’ component of cyberpunk.” The hero is the underdog that fights against The Megacorporation.

Society/Government: So, where is the villain? Right here. Greedy megacorporations replace the government, gathering up as much power as they can and using it for their own purposes while the government is weak politically, economically, and militarily. Also society-wise, social order has broken down to some degree.

I hope you get a better sense of what cyberpunk is now. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments section, and I’ll do the best I can to answer!

In other news, today marks the beginning of National Novel Writing Month, and I’m pretty ecstatic about that. I have a paranormal romance project I’m working on during it. Woot! It’s something I’ve kept on the back-burner for a while, so I’m happy to finally get a chance to write it.

Six Sentence Sunday 6

Ha! Look at that. My sixth Six Sentence Sunday. Isn’t that a tongue twister? Feel free to check out my previous entries here.

This week’s six continues where we left off the last time. Ian and Hannah had a great kiss, but it’s time for them to get to work.

Ian grinned and reached for his white towel. “I’ll go hop in the shower real quick.” He wiped off his face and hung the towel around his shoulders as he sauntered away.

Hannah’s life had been a roller coaster after reuniting with Ian, her once ex-boyfriend. Now he was her partner in their private investigation company, Hacked Investigations, which specialized in technology-related crimes. The clientele so far had kept them busy, with common requests that involved backtracking various network intrusions to their point of origin and leaving the rest to the customers.

Savage Bytes, Book 2 of the Hacked Investigations series, available from Changeling Press.
